IN ONE HOUR!
Among the many cities mentioned in scripture there are two that are at once literal and symbolic. The first is Jerusalem and the second Babylon.
Jerusalem is God's city; it will be the physical centre on earth from which the Lord Jesus will administer His coming Millennial Kingdom. Describing it as it will be in that still future day, the Psalmist wrote, “Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the Great King” (Psa. 49:2).
On the other hand Babylon is Satan's city. In Genesis we read how it was built in open rebellion against God and so it has continued, at least in symbol, until this day. Moving from the first book of the Bible to the last book, the book of Revelation, we learn of Babylon's judgement. In chapter 17 the judgement falls on Religious Babylon, and then in chapter 18 it falls on Commercial Babylon. In each instance the judgement is not only severe but swift!
(See also Isaiah 13, where earlier judgements on Babylon are set over against this final and still future judgement.)
John, the Seer of Revelation, tells us, “I saw another angel come down from heaven ... and he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, ‘Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of demons, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird’’(Rev. 18:1).
