Two decades ago, as the year 2,000 approached, there was widespread optimism. Now the world is fearful - fearful for the planet and fearful for its inhabitants. On 7th May 2019 the ‘I’ newspaper carried the headlines, “Planet in crisis: ‘one million species at risk of extinction”, adding, “Future generations will be at risk of starvation as food and water shortages grip the world, warns landmark UN report.” Human behaviour, climate change, over-development and intensive farming ‘destroying nature's safety net’. Numerous other factors instil fear, such as terrorism and senseless violence and, above all, huge arsenals of weapons of mass destruction, some in the hands of rogue regimes.

Paul wrote: “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God” (2 Cor. 5:20). This is how we are to fulfil our great commission, as encapsulated in Matthew 28:18-20 and Luke 24:47: ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” ... “and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” If we read on into the book of Acts, we find that both aspects are essential: being reconciled to God involves repentance leading to remission of sins. There is no other Gospel.

The world is currently in a crisis situation; ambassadors must be credible. If congregations, remain in ‘holy huddles’, and refuse to share God-given information and warnings, they will be seen to be irrelevant. On the
evening of His betrayal, Jesus told the Eleven: “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all
things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you” (John 15:14-15)...
