THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS
 

The promise of a coming Saviour was first spoken of by God to the serpent in the Garden of Eden. The seed of the woman was to crush his head. Genesis 3:15.

Adam and Eve must have been overjoyed at the prospect of a promised Saviour. They had as yet no children, and the first thing they did when banished from the garden was to get on with being fruitful and increasing in number. Genesis 4:1.

“More than a prophet” is how the Lord Jesus described His forerunner, John the Baptist. All the Hebrew prophets had been like finger posts pointing forward to the coming Messiah, and the Baptist had done the same. But there was an added dimension to his ministry. Besides pointing forward to the coming One, he had the privilege of actually pointing Him out.

Straws in the Wind

The prophet Joel whose name means “the Lord is God" prophesied in the days of young king Joash who reigned in Judah from 835 BC to 796 BC. Joash was the eighth king of Judah and although he began well enough he finished badly becoming a cruel tyrant who sanctioned the stoning of Judah's high priest.
