The Rise Of ISIS

Most of us understand little of Islam and even less about the violent and chaotic events in the Middle East. In this first study we’ll examine the background and rise of Isis and why it appears attractive to young Muslims, even those brought up within a comfortable Western culture.

Then, in a later study we’ll try to make sense of what is happening in Iraq and Syria and how that is impacting upon the rest of the world.

It is important firstly, to understand the mind-set of Middle Eastern cultures, people who would claim descent from Abraham through his son, Ishmael. In Gen. 16 v 12 the Lord describes the characteristic nature of Ishmael and his descendants saying, "He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility towards all his brothers“. Later, describing Ishmael’s sons in Gen. 25 v 18, we read: “And they lived in hostility towards all their brothers.”

These words were pronounced about 2600 years before Islam was founded, but many would recognise...
