John: The Apostle Of The Love Of God

by Samuel T. Carson, Northern Ireland.

“More than a prophet” is how the Lord Jesus described His forerunner, John the Baptist. All the Hebrew prophets had been like finger posts pointing forward to the coming Messiah, and the Baptist had done the same. But there was an added dimension to his ministry. Besides pointing forward to the coming One, he had the privilege of actually pointing Him out.

Looking upon Jesus one day as He walked, John said, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” Clearly, the emphasis that day was on the work Christ had come to do; to take away the sin of the world. The next day, however, the focus was on who Christ is: He is the Lamb of God. And so John said simply, “Behold the Lamb of God” (John 1:29 & 36). Taken together the person and work of Christ constitute the core theme of the gospel.

Two of his own disciples were among the many who heard the Baptist speak that day, and their immediate response was to follow Jesus. It was around four o’clock in the afternoon, if the hour referred to was according to Roman time, and the rest of the day was spent in the presence of Jesus. We can only surmise what was said, and what truth was made known to them as they communed together....
