The Emerging World Government.

By Tony Pearce - Light for the Last Days

In the splendour of Rome’s Campidoglio building designed by Michelangelo on Capitoline Hill, the leaders of the European Union signed up for the European Constitution with great pomp and circumstance. The Constitution is another big step on the way for the EU to become a superstate of 25 nations with its own currency, flag, parliament, President, foreign policy and legal system that will ultimately replace the individual countries of Europe.

French President Jacques Chirac told reporters the constitution deepens ‘the roots of peace and democracy on our continent.’ The EU constitution, which includes a charter of fundamental rights, gives the continent ‘greater capacity for making Europe more secure, more prosperous, more just,’ said Jan Peter Balkenende, the Dutch leader whose nation holds the EU presidency. Despite the fact that the Constitution needs to be ratified by individual nations and passed by referenda in six of those countries, the institutions it proposes, like an EU diplomatic service, are already being put in place.

It is interesting that Rome, not Brussels or Strasbourg, was chosen for the signing of the constitution since Bible prophecies in Daniel 2 and 7 and Revelation 17 indicate a revival of the Roman Empire which will become a dominant force in the world in the days leading up to the return of the Messiah Jesus.

It is also significant that European leaders spoke about ‘peace’ and ‘security’ as the plus points for nations accepting the Constitution which means surrendering more of their sovereignty to the EU. As politicians create crises bringing chaos and confusion to our lives, people cry out for peace and security and are willing to sacrifice freedom to obtain this. Whether this is being done deliberately (i.e. it is a conspiracy) or as a result of incompetence is a matter of debate, but either way the result is the same. A false promise of peace and security coming out of a time of trouble will make way for the final world government of the Antichrist prophesied in the Bible. In 1 Thessalonians 5.3 we read, ‘For when they say, ‘Peace and Safety!’ then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labour pains on a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.’

It is not just European countries that are merging into regional power blocs. North American national borders would be virtually eliminated under plans being considered by senior business and political leaders from Canada, the United States and Mexico for a ‘NAFTA-plus,’ (North American Free Trade Area) continent-wide, customs-free zone with a common approach to trade, energy, immigration, law enforcement and security. The ‘NAFTA-plus’ plan has also been referred to as ‘deep integration.’ Sceptics see it as a plan to eliminate national sovereignty and erode the American concept of representative government accountable to the people under the framework of the Constitution. Discussions so far indicate that Canada, under the new agreement, would immediately sign on to the U.S. strategic missile defence initiative. Canada would also make its vast lumber resources available to the U.S. and Mexican markets and provide more open access to its oil, natural gas and hydro-electric power resources.

In Asia China and India are rising as regional economic powers seeking to establish themselves as rivals to western power and influence. An article in the New York Times (18/11/04) shows how the USA is cutting back its areas of influence in Asia while China is pumping resources, people and economic power into the region. US tourists and businesses are giving way to Chinese visitors and many business people in East Asia who see the way the wind is blowing are now learning Chinese rather than English. ‘China wants to be more influential here to replace America,’ said Vanchai Sirichana, the president of Mae Fah Luang University in Thailand. ‘The world revolved around the United States for a very long time. I think people are beginning to understand that one day China can become another superpower.’ That view is more and more common in this part of the world.

At the same time Russian President Putin is taking a lead role in putting together a powerful coalition of regional and economic powers in the world. The coalition consists of India, China, Russia and Brazil and aims to challenge the superpower supremacy of America as well as the European Union. Putin wants to establish a long-term Russian foothold in Latin America in order to expand Moscow’s geopolitical influence in the region. Brazil is very open to the coalition concept in order that these large countries support each other in term of trade, economics, international politics and defence. The conflict over the election result in Ukraine can be seen as a part of this conflict between the Euro coalition and the Russian one.

According other think tanks, this coalition would have an overwhelming influence over the United Nations, where Russia and China are permanent members of the Security Council and India and Brazil are in the process of becoming the same. In terms of population, the coalition will have three quarters of the world population, largest amount of natural resources and largest pool of technical and scientific talent.

To counter this trend Tony Blair is urging America and Europe to unite in the cause of bringing democracy to the world. In his November speech at the Lord Mayor’s banquet at London’s Guildhall Mr Blair warned the United States not to go-it-alone as the world’s policeman. He urged America and Europe to unite behind a new doctrine that would allow the most powerful nations to intervene against regimes that harm their own people. The Prime Minister issued a strong plea to US neo-conservatives to endorse a multilateral approach, through a United Nations armed with a new charter allowing it to force ‘bad’ countries like Saddam Hussein’s Iraq to respect human rights and democracy.

Mr Blair urged Kofi Annan, the UN secretary general, to include in a package of reforms giving ‘a greater role of leadership for the UN on the responsibility of states to protect, not injure, their own citizens.’

As these regional power blocs emerge we can see the coming fulfilment of the scenario spoken of in the Bible in which ‘the ten kings’ give their power to the beast. The blocs of nations emerging out of the shifting centres of power in the 21st century tie in with the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation. In Daniel 2 the image of Nebuchadnezzar which represents Gentile power from his own time right through to the second coming of the Messiah Jesus has as its last manifestation ten toes ‘partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron’ … ‘and as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. As you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay.’ (Daniel 2.42-3).

While Europe and America wish to export their idea of democracy to the world, much of the developing world is more concerned about economic issues and willing to sacrifice freedom of speech for strong government that brings economic prosperity, along the Chinese model. The iron of dictatorship and the clay of democracy do not hold together creating the instability that will mark the last days of this age.

As this instability threatens to bring the whole house of cards crashing down so the world powers will be willing to surrender their power to the central authority set up by the UN. Tony Blair is already putting forward proposals which would cause this to happen if you consider the implication of his words quoted above. There is at present a plan to increase the number of nations on the UN Security Council from the present five members to ten. In Revelation 17.12-13 we read ‘The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour with the beast. These are of one mind and they will give their power and authority to the beast.’

A number of foreseeable events could cause these strong nations to be willing to surrender their power to a central authority. A Middle East war threatening to cut off oil supplies to the rest of the world, a series of devastating terrorist attacks in major world cities, or even the rapture of the church (1 Thessalonians 4.13-5.11) could cause a global panic as a result of which people are willing to give up national sovereignty and freedom in return for the promise of ‘peace and safety.’

However the Bible makes it clear that the ‘peace and safety’ offered by the coming world government will be a delusion and will lead to the tyranny of the beast / Antichrist system and the final war of Armageddon (Revelation 13 –19). This will cause the second coming of Messiah when ‘the kingdoms of this world’ will become ‘the kingdom of our Lord and of His Messiah, and He shall reign for ever and ever.’ The choice we have to make is whether to put our trust in the empty words of the leaders of the present world system which is doomed to destruction after the brief reign of the Antichrist (3½ years rising to power, 3½ years in absolute power) or in the words of the Lord who will reign for ever and ever.
