Straws in the Wind
by Samuel T. Carson
It is now two thousand years (approx) since the time of our Lord's first advent.
It was two thousand years from Adam to Abraham and two thousand years from Abraham to Christ in His first advent, and now another two thousand years have come and gone. Is there any significance in this, or is it just a straw in the wind?
The references in the New Testament to our Lord’s second advent pre-suppose that when the time comes, Israel will be in the land! Since A.D. 70 when the Romans destroyed the city and scattered the people this was not the case. But it is the case today, as it has been since 1948. Again, is there any significance in this, or is it just another straw in the wind?
Anticipating His return Jesus said in the Olivet discourse, ‘Nation shall rise against nation (Matt. 24:7). What is not generally understood is that the word for nation in this reference is not the usual word. Rather it is the word from which we get our word Ethnic or Ethnicity. It might be rendered ‘Ethnic group will rise against ethnic group.’ Those old enough to remember the second world war will recognize that it was probably the last of the great battlefield wars. Since then there have been wars and rumours of wars but they have been mostly ethnic groups fighting one another. This was certainly true in Iraq and it is true today in Syria and in the Middle East. Can we see any there any significance in these things, or are they again just so many straws in the wind?
In the same address Jesus went on, ‘There shall be earthquakes in divers places’ (Matt. 24:7). Science constantly informs us of a marked increase in what are called natural disasters: not only in their incidence but also in their intensity. Only a few months ago we stood aghast before our television screens and looked at the ravages wrought in Indonesia by the earthquake off the coast of Central Sulawesi. It triggered a tsunami that spelt disaster for an estimated 1.5 million people. More recently we have been appalled at the fires in California. Not even the might of mighty America could bring them under control, before unimaginable damage had been done!
What shall we say then to these things? Well, what did Jesus say? He said, “When these things begin to come to pass, look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draws near’ (Luke 21:28). And again, ‘Be ye also ready for in such an hour as you think not the Son of man cometh’ (Matt 24, 44).
As together we wait for God's Son from Heaven,
I remain your fellow-servant,
