What in the World is Happening
- August 2007

A series of articles by Brian Papworth,
our PWMI Representative in New Zealand.

So! What in the world is happening? A look around the world soon reminds us that Satan's battle against God is coming to an end as the Devil becomes more desperate. He knows his time is running short.

If we look at Bible prophecy of the "end times" and compare it with the news, we soon see the scenario for the last days becoming very apparent. The hostility against the Jews is increasing. Even with Israel threatened from all sides, Jewish people are immigrating to Israel in increasing numbers, because it seems safer than in places like Russia, France and Britain plus other parts of Europe. This is due to increasing anti-Semitism. Even the Christian Church has seen a rise in the heresy of "Replacement Theology" where people, in spite of Bible passages such as Romans 11 and many promises of the Old Testament say that the Church has replaced Israel. God has never replaced his people Israel, never let us forget that.

In recent weeks Russia has reared its head as it tries to reassert itself both with the objection for the American proposal to set up anti-missile bases in the Ukraine, as a defence against Iran. Plus Russia's continued supply of arms and technical expertise to the Arab states such as Iran and Syria. The interpretation of Russia being the Magog of Ezekiel 38 who assists such lands as Persia [Iran] and others in attacking Israel in the last days seems daily more likely.

Lebanon, the once only Christian state in the Middle East continues to suffer conflict, as the Lebanese army tries to eliminate the active faction of militant Islamists bailed up in the refugee camp. Its Christian population mainly having emigrated to other countries leaving a moderate Moslem government trying to steer a middle path in spite of pressures of elements from Syria and Iran. Meanwhile Syria is massing their troops on their border with Israel. Iran continues to posture against both the West and Israel along with accusations that Iran is also helping insurgents in Iraq. They are making sure that when allied soldiers withdraw from Iraq, militant Islam is ready to take over and rule.

The degree of surveillance in Europe is attracting the notice of the press. A widespread security system is being set up that will record individuals movements country wide. Increasing pressures are becoming evident on Christians, Jews and Moslems restricting their ability to express their beliefs in public as regard to other religions, homosexuals and other understandings and teachings. How long will it be before preaching the Gospel becomes hate speech! Let us be alert so that we protect our freedoms. If we look at what's happening worldwide at the moment under the guise of security, we can see how Satan is trying to set things up for a future time when he is allowed to reign through the Antichrist for seven years. We are told that the rebels will become increasingly wicked when the Antichrist appears on the world scene and authority will become heavy handed. [Dan 8:23-26] [Dan 11:36].

In the USA this seemingly free and Christian country continues in its policy of separating church and state. In several places, plaques listing the "Ten Commandments" have been removed from courthouses, colleges and schools and many are seeking changes to the original constitution to remove Christian wording. The teaching of "Replacement Theology" is becoming prevalent in many main line churches. This mainly has been caused through the failure of many churches to teach Biblical truths regarding the second coming of Christ and the place of Israel in the scheme of things. Although a high proportion of Americans attend church, crime, sin and broken families abound. The economy of the USA continues to decline and the countries international debt increases day by day. Several nations have talked of making the Euro the international benchmark currency, replacing the US dollar. This would have a devastating effect on the USA but would point to countries which make up the "Treaty of Rome" that is the European Union, as the centre of world government and as the leading authority of world currency. [Dan 2:40-43] [Rev 18:1-24].

We daily see persecution and murder of Christians in many lands and hatred of Jews with many voices against the land of Israel and anything it does [Ezek 36:3-7]. The situation in Israel and Palestine remains confused with the militant Islamic organisation of Hamas overcoming the more moderate Fatah organisation. This will see any past Western peace initiatives go out the window. If this militant Islamic movement being pushed by Syria and Iran continues we could see the moderate governments of Saudi Arabia and Jordan under threat.

As we see the increasing trouble in the Middle East again we come back to the Bible's teaching about the return of Christ and the things that are due to happen just prior to that time. Are you ready to meet the Lord Jesus?

Yours in His Service
