Historic or Prophetic?

Later this month, between 16th-19th Sept 2010, the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the U.K. will take place amidst, presumably, an avalanche of media publicity.

The images of the Roman Pontiff will undoubtedly fill the television screens and cover the front pages of all our newspapers. The reportage, of course, won't stop there for the event is guaranteed to be made known around the world as Vatican publicists make the most out of the event.

A question which arises in many of our minds is this; 'Will the event be historic or prophetic?'

To the Psalmist of old the light was upon the distant city wall for the benighted traveller, and the horn lamp was to show up pitfalls and waymarkers. Prophetically the light was Messiah's coming. Prophetically for the Church, Christ's coming again for us is the light, that "blessed hope and glorious appearing" (Titus 2: 13). Thereafter His return in power will be the light for Tribulation converts. The signs of the times illuminate current events and show us that we are still on track. If we are among the prophesied latter day scoffers, we will fail to notice God's graciously given waymarkers; yet they are becoming ever more frequent.

The Financial Crisis

We were giving out leaflets advertising one of our meetings at The Bridge at the time when the present economic crisis was beginning. A Christian went past and said, 'Everyone will turn to Christ now because the system is being shaken and they will realise that Christ is the answer.' 'Not necessarily,' I replied. 'They may turn to antichrist.' He thought I was being a bit defeatist, but a study of history shows that it was out of the economic crisis of 1930s that Hitler arose in Germany.
