Monthly Comment - December 2008

This month millions of unbelievers will celebrate Jesus' first coming, and millions of believers will ignore His second. How strange! Those of us who preached on Bible prophecy fifty or more years ago might have found their notes appropriate with only minor modifications several years later. Admittedly over the ensuing decades there were occasional milestone happenings, such as the Treaty of Rome, the Six Days War and Yom Kippur War to keep us on our toes.

But suddenly the pace of change has accelerated rapidly. I am sure that I am not the only Prophetic Witness contributor who recently has wanted to up-date an article within days of submitting it, because of something in the news. Yet, as the signs of the times demand our attention ever more urgently, so Christian leaders bury their heads more deeply in the sands of scoffing, apathy, disbelief and dismay. Some do pray most earnestly about what they see happening, but forget that it has all been foretold by the One in whose name they pray. We should not only be solemnised, but also challenged and even excited.

Monthly Comment - November 2008

Dear Friends,

We are living in a world of change and upheaval. Just a few years ago, who would have thought of the monolith of Communism disappearing almost overnight? Or how militant Islam would become such a world threat? Now we are witnessing the weather behaving unnaturally. Banks with household names having to be rescued. Major airlines and holiday companies becoming bankrupt. Where there were recently embarrassing food mountains we now see shortages. Oil, gas, electricity unaffordable to the poorer of our society and now western capitalism in danger of collapse.

NOSTALGIA...

What a week! The Big Bang, the channel tunnel fire, the credit crunch, banking problems and stock markets in freefall. No wonder some will exclaim, - "give me the good old days!"

Nostalgia, the dictionary states, is "a sentimental yearning for the past." Humanly speaking this may be understandable to a point. For the Christian in these days, it may be helpful in reflecting on 'the good old days', but at the same time looking forward in keen anticipation to a glorious future.

HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

As I write this article the situation outside looks gloomy. The weather for August has been terrible, the credit crunch is biting deeper and the Cold War seems to be back with Russia making threats of nuclear strikes. For most people in the world the only bright spark is that Team GB have bagged a record number of gold medals in the Olympics.

Politicians and economists tell us it will get better in a year or two but I am never quite sure on what they are basing this hope.

THE LAST DAYS

"Watch ye therefore and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass and to stand before the Son of Man" (Luke 21:36).
