The Papal Visit
Historic or Prophetic?

Later this month, between 16th-19th Sept 2010, the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the U.K. will take place amidst, presumably, an avalanche of media publicity.

The images of the Roman Pontiff will undoubtedly fill the television screens and cover the front pages of all our newspapers.
The reportage, of course, won't stop there for the event is guaranteed to be made known around the world as Vatican publicists make the most out of the event.

A question which arises in many of our minds is this; 'Will the event be historic or prophetic?'

Coming Wrath & Coming Safety

The latter part of the first chapter of Proverbs is one of the most solemn passages in the whole of God's Word. Those of my readers who have never given any study to these verses I hope you will do so. We will seek to give earnest thought to them now. I am convinced that, tremendously solemn as they are, yet they are soon to be fulfilled in their awful intensity.Proverbs 1, 33 and onwards.

"Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil."

The Theology of Israel

These three chapters of the Book of Romans are often skipped in many commentaries. These commentators do not take what God said about Israel too seriously and teach that the Church is the "new Israel" They, therefore, do not feel that these chapters importantant. Or is it, perhaps, that what Paul has to say here contradicts their theology? These commentaries provide a verse by verse, word by word commentary covering chapters 1-8, and then skip over to chapters 12-16, totally dropping chapters 9, and 11. Other commentaries that do take chapters 9, 10, and 11 somewhat seriously and do comment upon them, will often refer to these three chapters as being merely "parenthetical," not part of Paul's main argument.

The thirteenth chapter of Matthew is a watershed in that particular gospel and in the ministry of Jesus. Failure to comprehend the meaning of the parables in this chapter will seriously handicap the Bible student in his quest to "rightly divide the word of truth," and in particular to understand the gospels and their place in the canon of Scripture.

The Crucial Cross

My favourite Easter Hymn is maybe yours also? It begins "When I survey" and includes the very meaningful expression "the wondrous cross". Indeed the cross has always been a wondrous thing to all believers. Not that we are saved by the cross! Rather we are saved by the Man who died on it and by the power of His precious and redeeming blood so freely donated and shed for us. However, a past and much loved editor of this Magazine, Ian MacPherson had in print a telling sermon which he entitled "THE CRUCIAL CROSS" I feel sure he will not mind me borrowing it from him!

Certainly the cross is crucial! Love's redeeming work on Calvary is our only hope....

I Will Show Wonders
In Heaven

An elderly gentleman looked out of his window one night and saw a man trying to break into a car. He immediately called the police who later caught the man with the stolen vehicle. When the case was brought to court the old man had to stand witness and was cross examined by the defendant's lawyer. He tried to make out that the senior citizen was too old and too visually impaired to be a credible witness against his client. "Tell me, sir," he said, "at your age, just how far can you see at night?" The old man thought for a moment and then replied, 'Well, I can see the moon - how far is that?" Of course his answer not only tells us something about his eyesight (and wit), but also about the moon itself. Along with the sun and the stars the moon is visible to all which is why God made them for signs in the heavens. "

The Late, Great U.S.A.

On 6th April last year, Dick Morris, political commentator and former advisor to Bill Clinton, made the following announcement on his website:  
"On April 2,2009, the work of July 4, 1776 (American Independence Day) was nullified at the meeting of the G20 in London".
That was an astonishing statement to make, and a tragic one if true. ...     ... Why are so many Americans concerned that our great country is on the 'Verge of extinction?
