The scientific and technological achievements of the twentieth century, the increasing sense of insecurity, the widespread deterioration of moral standards, the instability resulting from the effects of a permissive society, have all combined in recent years to create a deeper interest in the future of the race and of the world. There are not wanting prophets of woe whose scientific jeremiads forecast either an unparalleled holocaust in the near future, or else an imminent dissolution of the earth in consequence of some uncontrolled thermonuclear explosion.
